Senator Tammy Baldwin’s bill aimed at protecting Wisconsin’s lakes has passed in the Senate.
The Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Research and Control Amendments Act, co-written by Arkansas Republican Senator Dan Sullivan, would reauthorize the HABHRCA of 1998.
That measure established an interagency task force to assess the distribution of harmful algal blooms and their impacts on coastal waters and human health.
Sen. Baldwin says the reauthorization of it would improve coordination among state and local entities, as well as Indian tribes, to improve monitoring, forecasting, prevention, and mitigation of algal blooms and hypoxia.
She calls lakes “essential to our Wisconsin way of life”, but noted, “We are seeing more and more dangerous algae on our lakes, and if we want to protect them for the next generation, we’re going to have to act.”
