Today (September 11th) marks a tragic day in America’s history, with it being the 24th anniversary of 9/11.
It was on this day that terrorists hijacked four planes across the country, with two flying into the World Trade Center in New York, another hitting the Pentagon in Virginia, and another crashing into a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.
Twelve people with Wisconsin ties died in the tragic event. Although none were from Manitowoc, there is a memorial for one of the victims who died on Flight 93, the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania. During the 10th anniversary, Manitowoc officials held a ceremony and tribute to recognize Christine Snyder.
Although she’s from Hawaii originally, a Flowering Pear Tree was planted in Red Arrow Park as a seedling from the only surviving tree at Ground Zero.
Snyder was in New York at an Arborist Conference and stayed a few extra days to visit family before boarding Flight 93.
However, it was the connection that provided Manitowoc with the opportunity to have the tree.
Over 3,000 people lost their lives during the terrorist attacks.
