Proposed fee increases from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection could mean steep new costs for farm animal transporters.
These could potentially rise by as much as 1,600%.
For example, a Class-A license currently priced at $420 could jump to $7,430.
The Wisconsin Farm Bureau warns these hikes could drive up the cost of meat at the grocery store, as added expenses are passed along the supply chain.
The Department argues that the current fee structure no longer covers the growing costs of monitoring animal health and safety.
Public hearings are scheduled for September 11, 16, and 17, and written feedback will be accepted through October 15.
