A major road project in Sheboygan is scheduled to begin next week.
The City’s Department of Public Works has announced that the intersection of Wilgus Avenue and North Taylor Drive will begin an extensive closure on Monday morning (September 15th) amid a substantial infrastructure overhaul.
During the closure, the intersection will be reconstructed and widened to include a full-width right-turn lane on Wilgus Avenue eastbound, something Sheboyganites have been calling for for years.
In addition to the right-turn lane, the project will include storm sewer improvements, roadway enhancements, new traffic signals, and ADA-compliant crosswalks.
The project at the intersection will be completed in two phases, with the first beginning next week and the second coming sometime in mid-October.
During phase one, Wilgus will be closed with no access to Taylor Drive, while Taylor Drive will be reduced to one lane in both directions with no access to Wilgus.
During phase two, which will begin in mid-October, Wilgus Avenue will have access to perform only right turns onto Taylor Drive; however, no through access will be available to continue through the intersection on Wilgus.
North Taylor Drive will also remain open during phase two, with one through lane in each direction and access to Wilgus via right turns, but left turn movements will still be prohibited.
At this time, this closure is expected to be in place until sometime in mid- to late-November.
As is the case with all road work in the City of Sheboygan, all closures and traffic impacts are weather-dependent and subject to change.
The DPW finished their announcement by saying, “The City of Sheboygan appreciates your patience and cooperation during this project. For everyone’s safety, please slow down and exercise caution in all work zones.”
