Two Rivers is looking to improve the shoreline at one of their parks.
The city council on Monday (September 2nd) approved a resolution to submit a grant application to the Wisconsin DNR to support the Washington Park Shoreline Restoration Project.
City Parks and Recreation Director Mike Mathis explained to the council that the $16,000 request would be used to remove invasive plant species and hopefully deter Canadian geese from staying around the park.
The city would also work on re-establishing native vegetation to improve the water quality and habitat.
The grant requires a match, meaning the city would need to put some of its own money into the project, however, Mathis noted, “We don’t have any matching funds set aside for this.”
He went on to explain, “What we would do in this case is use parks and rec staff labor as an in-kind match. So, we’re pretty well budgeted to be able to a number of added projects throughout the year like we have on other big grant projects.”
Mathis also said the project would be done in the river flat area in the park.
In a memo from City Manager Kyle Kordell, “the initiative supports the city’s long-term goal of resilient shoreline management and aligns with state and regional priorities for water quality and habitat protection.”
