Manitowoc Fire Rescue is warning residents of the risks of lithium-ion batteries.
These batteries are used in a wide array of everyday items, including smartphones, tablets, power tools, toys, and a whole lot more.
In fact, if it’s rechargeable, it’s likely a lithium-ion battery.
While rechargeable batteries save people hundreds of dollars per year, they are also dangerous because if they are not used correctly or become damaged, they can overheat, start a fire, or even explode.
The Manitowoc Fire Rescue Department encourages everyone to only use cords that come with a product to charge it, and to follow the instructions from the manufacturer.
If you do need a new charger or cord, make sure you are using a manufacturer-approved item.
Also, when charging items, make sure they are on a hard surface, as placing them on a pillow, bed, or couch could cause a fire.
Additionally, lithium-ion batteries should not be discarded with the regular trash or recyclables, as that could also cause a fire.
Instead, visit Call2Recycle.org to see where you can safely dispose of your device.
