A settlement has been reached in a federal housing discrimination case based in Appleton.
U.S. Attorney Richard Frohling has announced that a settlement agreement was reached on August 22nd in regard to the case United States v. Estrada.
As part of the settlement, landlords Tammy and Ramiro Estrada will pay $20,000 to their tenants who alleged they were discriminated against on the basis of disability, in violation of the Fair Housing Act (FHA).
In the original complaint, the victims alleged that the Estradas denied them a reasonable accommodation related to emotional support animals.
They further stated that their landlords then retaliated against them when they attempted to exercise their rights under the FHA.
Initially, the Department of Housing and Urban Development conducted an investigation and issued a charge of discrimination against the Estradas.
In addition to the payment of $20,000, the landlords will be required to adopt a reasonable accommodation policy while also attending fair housing training.
