It may not have been the varsity players, but there was a doozy of a high school football game in De Pere last night.
Manitowoc Lincoln was in De Pere for a freshman game against the Redbirds, and the two teams put on a show.
The back-and-forth contest had several high-octane plays, including a near 90-yard touchdown run by Ship’s Quarterback Andrew Charles to get Lincoln on the board.
The Ships found themselves down two scores with three minutes left, when Charles found Maxen Cummings in the corner of the endzone.
The extra point was blocked, but the Ships never gave up, as the defense caused a quick 3-and-out.
The offense, with 1:12 on the clock, was able to get the Redbirds to the 45-yard line to set up a last chance shot down the field.
Charles found Taylon Foster, who lateraled the ball to Drew Erlandson, with no defenders on the far side of the field.
The offensive lineman ran as fast as he could, but he got caught at the 15-yard line.
He attempted to lateral it again, but that turned into a fumble, which was recovered on the 10-yard line.
In the end, the Red Birds claimed a 35-27 victory in what turned into an all-time classic.
