The City of Manitowoc is preparing for a major road project in 2029.
The Common Council approved a WisDOT Reconstruction Project agreement for sanitary sewer design in preparation for reconstruction on Highway 42 or Calumet Avenue and Washington Street in Manitowoc.
The city and WisDOT have hired Ayres and Associates to design the sanitary sewers, which will be submitted in October and November.
The sanitary sewer replacement is expected to be along South 41st Street, all the way to South 8th Street.
Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels tells Seehafernews.com that a lot needs to be done, including engineering studies and the alignment of the sanitary sewer.
“(WisDOT) is designing the road,” he noted. “We have to get all that ready and geared up for the engineering because there’s a lot to get done before 2029.”
One portion of the project included is lighting on the streets.
Nickels says the decorative lighting is something the city wants to continue after construction is complete.
“That’s something that the state, they won’t do it, because they’re philosophy is just replace what’s there,” he described. “Same thing with the road, unless they choose to do something different. So that will be something we want to see done so we have to tell them that well in advance so they don’t start ordering things and all that for the project.”
According to the WisDOT project, the 2029 Calumet Avenue project will include replacing the existing pavement, sidewalks, curb, and gutter.
All traffic signals will also be replaced, along with a proposed roundabout at Custer Street. 26th to 8th Street will also be converted to have a two-way left turn lane, bike lanes, and on-street parking.
