Agriculture is thriving in Manitowoc County, as evidenced by the success at the Manitowoc County Fair.
Agricultural Educator Angie Ulness tells Seehafernews.com that it is specifically the case in youth showings.
While yesterday was the showmanship competition, today (August 22nd), youth will compete in the conformation classes.
Ulness says that’s when judges will be looking at a breed, specifically cows, and determine the best based on their looks.
And there are a lot of cows at this year’s fair.
“Holsteins, Guernsey, Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Red and White Holsteins,” she listed. “I mean, almost all the breeds are represented here except milking Shorthorn.”
That competition gets underway at 9:00 a.m. Other events for cattle showings include the Kids, Cows, and Costumes event on Saturday (August 23rd) followed by an auction at 3:00 p.m. as well.
Ulness also said that there are several new youth clubs at the fair this year, including the Mishicot Marvels, Cleveland Clovers, and Reedsville FFA, which are showing animals.
The kids were up early, making sure their animals looked good to show.
“And I think that one of the best things is watching the friendships being formed,” she noted. “The laughing, the kids bond with their calves lying next to them in the pack.”
Ulness says agriculture is thriving in Manitowoc County because of the families investing in the county and the quality of animals they have.
“We have 141 dairy producers in our county that are shipping milk, providing so much nutrition for the community,” she explained. “And what’s really exciting, when you’re walking through the barn, it’s multi-generational families here.”
The Manitowoc County Fair runs through Sunday (August 24th).
