A movement highlighting the damage caused by wake-enhanced boating in Wisconsin is starting to spread across the country.
The Coalition to Protect Wisconsin’s Lakes reports that efforts to regulate or stop this practice are appearing nationwide.
A recent University of Minnesota study found that these boats can harm lake bottoms, fish nests, and other habitats.
States like Vermont, Michigan, and Minnesota are considering laws to either ban or strictly limit wake-enhanced boats.
According to Last Wilderness Alliance Board Member Jef Meessmann, 61 towns in Wisconsin have already passed rules to regulate or ban these boats, helping to protect nearly 350 lakes.
The coalition includes about 100 members, such as fishing groups, supporters of local control, outdoor enthusiasts, and others.
