The kayaker who faked his death in Green Lake will be returning to court.
Court records show that 45-year-old Ryan Borgwardt, now an Appleton resident, is set for a plea and sentencing hearing in Green Lake County court on Tuesday (August 26th).
Currently, Borgwardt is facing one misdemeanor count of Obstructing an Officer for a string of events that took place last year.
These charges stem from an incident that happened in August of 2024, when the Green Lake Sheriff’s Office said the 45-year-old faked his own death under the guise of a kayaking accident.
It’s said that he staged his disappearance by leaving behind his kayak, vehicle, and other personal items before using an e-bike, a bus, and ultimately a plane to escape.
It was later speculated by the Sheriff’s Office that they received information that led them to believe that he had made it as far as Uzbekistan.
Extensive search efforts were undertaken by various emergency response units in the weeks following his “disappearance” before he was eventually arrested last December.
