A mental health check in Fond du Lac nearly turned violent.
Fond du Lac Police were dispatched to an apartment in the 800 block of Martin Avenue just after 5:00 Wednesday evening after family members voiced concerns for a 32-year-old man’s mental health.
It was learned that a 29-year-old woman was being held inside with her 8-month-old child as the man was wielding a box cutter.
The man promptly released the mother and child when police arrived, allowing officers to get them to a safe location.
A shelter-in-place notice was issued to the other residents while police established a perimeter around the building.
Fond du Lac city and county SWAT, crisis negotiators, armored vehicles, K-9 units, and technology response groups were all called to the scene.
The man was eventually taken into custody at around 9:20 p.m. after a successful use of flash bang devices and breaching tools.
The man’s identity is not being released at this time.
Police Chief Aaron Goldstein reflected on the situation, saying, “We are incredibly thankful this traumatic incident ended without further harm to a mother and her child. This was a dangerous situation, and the coordinated response by our FDLPD Officers alongside our law enforcement partners was instrumental in ensuring a safe outcome.”
