The Village of Allouez is prepared to discuss the next steps for the Green Bay Correctional Institution.
The village will host a public hearing as part of its regularly scheduled board meeting this coming Tuesday (August 19th) at 6:30 p.m. to discuss next steps in the long-awaited plan for closing the over 125-year-old prison.
The hearing comes as local community members look for clarity after Governor Tony Evers vetoed the 2029 GBCI closure timeline.
Allouez Village President Jim Rafter says the veto, “left invested communities uncertain about the future of the facility, and we need clarity on the plan to close the prison once and for all.”
State Representatives Ben Franklin and David Steffen, along with State Senator Jamie Wall, will be on hand to address the community and help create concrete steps toward closure.
Rafter and many other community members have wanted to close GBCI because of the conditions that inmates are living in and because of the age of the building.
