Froedtert Holy Family Memorial is trying to help prevent fall deaths.
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in 2023, Wisconsin is the leading state in the nation for fall-related deaths.
Froedtert Holy Family Home Health Services Specialist Nicole Naidl explained on WOMT’s Be My Guest that Manitowoc County was a leader between 2016 and 2021 as far as an increase in deaths.
“We’re sitting at about a 134% increase in deaths related to falls just for Manitowoc County,” she noted. “We need to…talk about this, to bring awareness to the issue.”
While many think falls are just a natural part of getting older, Naidl says falls can result from several factors.
“Many things like poor balance, weak muscles, vision problems, medications, and environmental hazards in our homes,” she explained. “And in many cases, by just addressing one or two of these risk factors can make a big, big difference.”
As people age, Naidl recommends focusing on improving strength and balance.
Older adults should also be aware of potential side effects from medications, as they can cause dizziness, drowsiness, and other symptoms.
The home health services specialist emphasizes the importance of keeping your home clean.
“Taking a look at throw rugs, or keeping your walkways clear,” she described. “Reducing clutter, improving the lighting around any transitions in flooring that you have. And secure cords.”
It’s also important to wear proper footwear and make sure you get some exercise.
