The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of another scam.
Residents have been getting fraudulent text messages that appear to be from the Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) claiming that someone has an outstanding traffic ticket.
The text then informs the recipient that the ticket will be enforced starting on August 15th and encourages them to click a link and “pay now.”
The sheriff’s office says the message is not from the DMV, but rather from scammers who are trying to trick you into providing personal financial information.
Residents are advised NOT to click on the link in the text and never pay for any supposed ticket with a gift card or digital currency.
Deputies ask people to delete the message immediately and tell friends and family.
If someone has fallen victim to the scam, they should contact local law enforcement or report it to reportfraud.ftc.gov.
