Sheboygan has received federal funding to curb the effects of climate change on the City’s lakeshore.
The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative has launched a new round of shoreline resilience projects aimed at erosion, flooding, and storm-related damage along the Great Lakes, which includes the Northern Bluffs Shoreline in Sheboygan.
The Northern Bluffs Shoreline Stabilization Project will investigate solutions that can be used to address bluff erosion, stormwater runoff, and degraded structures that run along the four-mile stretch of shoreline north of Sheboygan’s downtown.
Regarding the funding and state of the Northern Bluffs Shoreline, Sheboygan’s Mayor Ryan Sorenson said, “Climate change is only worsening threats to city infrastructure, homes, and community amenities in this area. This project will develop sustainable solutions to protect the most vulnerable stretch of our shoreline.”
Proposed solutions Mayor Sorenson touched on include bluff toe protection, beach nourishment, and expanded public access trails in the area.
