Two state correctional officers are denying that any rights were violated in the death of Micah Laureano.
Laureano was strangled to death at Green Bay Correctional Institution by 25-year-old Jackson Vogel, a Manitowoc County native, last year.
FOX11 reports that after the 19-year-old’s death, his mother filed a federal civil rights wrongful death lawsuit claiming the Wisconsin Department of Corrections was responsible for her son’s death.
The lawsuit names the corrections secretary, warden, and five John Does as defendants, claiming that the state did not follow procedures putting Laureano at risk, which resulted in his death.
According to documents, all the defendants deny engaging in discriminatory treatment or practices and deny violating the victims’ rights.
In a response signed by Attorney General Josh Kaul, the case is asked to be dismissed.
Jackson Vogel is currently serving a life sentence for 1st-degree intentional homicide.
He was in GBCI after being found guilty due to a no contest plea for an attempted homicide in Manitowoc County after he stabbed a relative.
