A bill penned by two Eastern Wisconsin legislators aimed at creating specialized “problem-solving” courts has been vetoed.
Governor Tony Evers shot down the measure, introduced by Senator Andre Jacque and Representative Ron Tusler.
In 2017, the Wisconsin Supreme Court established a pilot project dedicating circuit court judicial dockets for large-claim commercial cases, and this bill aimed to expand it to include treatment and business courts.
Sen. Jacque tells SeehaferNews.com that specialized, problem-solving courts – for drug treatment, OWI offenses, commercial disputes and others – have grown rapidly throughout the justice system, but this veto “leaves the future of these problem-solving courts uncertain.”
He also noted, “Wisconsin still lacks a more permanent system proven to reduce recidivism, aid the efficient resolution of commercial disputes, and reserve capacity in criminal courts to speed justice to victims of violent crime.”
