The Wisconsin DATCP is warning sports fans about a food truck vendor scam.
With the football season getting underway, scammers have been inviting vendors to participate in “fan events” and requesting payment of “vendor fees” through banking apps like Cash App, Venmo, Zelle, and PayPal.
DATCP Public Information Officer Caleb Kulich says scammers are using numerous Gmail accounts to contact targets and allow them to avoid spam filters.
The Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection tells food truck owners to avoid interacting with unexpected or unsolicited messages and to do research on offers they get.
Just like other scams, trustworthy organizations will not demand payment through peer-to-peer banking apps, cryptocurrency, or with a prepaid gift card.
More information about the scam can be found at dactp.wi.gov.
