Sheboygan’s Above and Beyond Children’s Museum is set to highlight Mexican Culture in the coming months.
The museum has shared that the subject of their next Community Culture Exchange Exhibit will feature the work and programming of Wisconsin-based Mexican artist Gabriela Marván, beginning later in August.
Marván’s exhibit will spend the next three months exploring topics such as Mexican folk traditions, including the origin of the alebrijes, the significance of ofrenda altars used during the Día de Los Muertos celebration, traditional Aztec dance, and much more.
Accompanying the exhibit will be hands-on workshops, with the first, an alebrijes, or wood or papier mâché sculpture workshop, taking place on August 23rd and 24th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
A Día de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead workshop, will be held on October 25th, allowing attendees the chance to build a community ofrenda altar and better understand the importance of an ofrenda’s role in Mexican culture.
Marván lives in Viroqua and works as a Cartonería, an artist focusing on sculptures made of paper, wire, and cardboard. She is also the founder of the Mexican Folk Art Collective.
