The man charged with setting fire to U.S. Representative Glenn Grothman’s office building in Fond du Lac has dropped his insanity plea.
19-year-old Caiden Stachowicz appeared in a Fond du Lac County courtroom yesterday (August 4th) for a status conference as he faces charges of Arson of a Building without the Owner’s Consent, Attempted Burglary, and Criminal Damage to Property.
At yesterday’s hearing, Stachowicz and his legal counsel rescinded his plea of not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect to all charges he faces.
The 19-year-old was arrested on January 19th by the Fond du Lac Police Department after they were called to the scene of a structure fire in the 500 block of North Peters Avenue, the location of an office space used by Rep. Grothman.
Following his arrest, he told police he had deliberately set the fire in response to the 6th District Congressman voting to ban the popular social media app TikTok.
Stachowicz was originally facing charges relating to making terrorist threats in relation to the incident; however, those charges have since been dropped.
He returns to court for a status conference on September 16th.
