The Lakeshore Humane Society will have to find another place to break ground for a new facility.
Manitowoc City Attorney Eric Nycz tells SeehaferNews.com that the Humane Society reached out to the city to gauge whether land on Indian Creek Park could be sold or leased.
In exchange for the use, Lakeshore Humane Society would agree to provide certain amenities that the city would help keep up, including bathroom facilities, parking spaces, and a stormwater treatment area.
Manitowoc also expressed the need to widen a driveway leading into the area to accommodate two-way traffic.
Nycz says since then, the city and Lakeshore Humane Society have worked hard to find a plan to achieve those goals, but the animal shelter later informed the city that the parties were at an impasse.
LHS thanked the city for their time, noting the “city’s willingness to entertain the idea of leasing the Lakeshore Humane Society’s valuable part of land,” but “after much consideration, we have decided to explore other possibilities.”
Nycz continues to note that the city maintains an excellent relationship and is personally appreciative of the excellent work that the LHS staff does.
The Humane Society announced on their Facebook page that the groundbreaking for their new facility, which will care for animals, has been delayed.
The shelter has been raising $3.8 million for a new shelter, which was planned to be built just north of their original building on 8th Street, near a dog park.
More information about the original plan can be found on the City of Manitowoc’s February 19, 2024, agenda at Manitowoc.org.
