August 31st is International Overdose Awareness Day, and Lighthouse Recovery Community Center is giving the community an opportunity to become more educated on the subject.
Representatives of the organization will be at the Rightway Club, located at 4627 S 12th Street in Sheboygan, starting at 4:00 p.m., where they will have brats and baked goods for sale to go along with several guest speakers, community resource tables, and a candlelight vigil.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reports that, as of July 15th, Manitowoc County first responders have responded to 17 overdose cases this year, while Sheboygan County has seen 29 cases.
Regionally, 310 people have overdosed, while 2033 overdoses have been reported around the state.
Outreach and Development Specialist for Lighthouse Recovery Community Center, Ian Schebel, explained that those numbers may be even higher as “Overdoses are often not reported out of fear of getting in trouble with either law enforcement, employers, or landlords.”
The Overdose Awareness event is open to all and is free of charge.
