Manitowoc County’s District Attorney says two more people in her office would be very helpful.
As part of the 2025-2027 Wisconsin state budget, funding was allocated to allow for two more assistant DAs in Manitowoc County.
District Attorney Jacalyn LeBre said on WOMT’s Be My Guest program that pay progression in the budget not only retains the current attorneys but also allows for the hiring of qualified candidates.
“The earliest I can hire is October,” she explained. “But now we run into the other problem is there’s a lot of new positions statewide so a lot of people trying to hire at the same time.”
She also says there has been a problem getting graduates to work for the government.
The District Attorney said, “So we’re reaching out to the law schools and try to kind of see what maybe we can do to say, this is what a prosecutor does, this what a public defender does, and these are good jobs.”
The money for the new positions will be included in her 2026 budget for the District Attorney’s department, which will be submitted to the county board for full approval.
