A popular scam is continuing to be used around the area.
The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents that they have received numerous reports of fraudsters posing as law enforcement officers, typically claiming the target had either missed jury duty or has a warrant for their arrest.
The scammers then pressure the potential victim into paying money to avoid arrest.
While many people have recognized this as a scam, there have been some who have fallen for the scam.
The Sheriff’s Office is reminding everyone that they will never call and demand a payment, especially via gift cards or mobile apps like Zelle or Venmo.
Real warrants are always served in person, not over the phone.
If you receive a call that is at all suspicious, you are encouraged to hang up immediately, don’t share personal information, and to contact your local law enforcement agency to report the scam.
