Mental Health America Lakeshore has opened registration for its 20th annual “There is HOPE Walk” to raise awareness and promote suicide prevention.
This year’s event is honoring the Luecke family of Sheboygan, who hosted the first inaugural walk 25 years ago.
Back in 2000, Doug and Kristi Luecke experienced an event no family should ever go through.
The family lost their son Nic to suicide.
Within the heartbreak, the family started healing and remembrance with the “There is HOPE Walk”.
What once began as the family’s tribute has grown into a powerful movement.
Since 2005, the Luecke family handed the walk to MHA Lakeshore, which since then has become the organization’s largest community event, helping the organization’s mission to promote mental health awareness.
This special event will take place Saturday, September 13th, at Deland Park and Sheboygan’s Lakeshore.
The event opens at 8:30 a.m. with registration, followed by the opening ceremony at 9:30 a.m.
The walk begins at 10:00 a.m. with options for 1-mile, 2-mile, or 3-mile routes along Lake Michigan.
After the walk, food will be provided, followed by community sharing.
The raffle drawing will begin at 11:30.
