As deaths on Wisconsin trails continue to climb, the Department of Natural Resources is urging UTV riders to buckle up.
As of today (July 25th), the DNR reports that there have already been 23 fatal ATV/UTV crashes in the state. In those fatal accidents, only five were wearing seatbelts, and 86% deaths occurred in incidents involving UTVs.
When addressing the uptick in fatal accidents, Lt. Jacob Holsclaw, Wisconsin DNR off-highway vehicle administrator, said, “UTVs are designed with key safety features, like roll cages and seatbelts, that are there to protect riders in the event of a crash or rollover. But those features can only help if they’re used.”
Not only do seatbelts significantly improve safety for UTV drivers and passengers, but it is also required by state law that they must be worn be every individual inside a UTV.
Lt. Holsclaw also said that while the numbers may be concerning, they do present a clear opportunity for prevention.
