A local Girl Scout was awarded a national scholarship for her efforts in creating an internship.
Amber Fiecko of Manitowoc, who’s also part of the Manitou Council Girl Scouts, was given the $5,000 scholarship after developing a business internship at Roncalli High School.
According to the council, Amber understood the importance of gaining real-world business experience in high school, but it was challenging for students who had to balance work with extracurricular activities and classes.
Fiecko took 80 hours to create the internship, presented it to teachers and board members before it got approved.
She participated in the program herself, which taught flexibility, critical thinking, collaboration, and other important skills related to future success in the workplace.
Amber said of the internship, “Even though my project focused more on behind-the-scenes work, I learned that helping others doesn’t always have to be hands-on because supporting systems and structure also matter.”
The internship not only earned her a scholarship but also a Gold Award, the highest achievement a Girl Scout can earn while in high school.
Girl Scouts of Manitou Council CEO Denise Schemenauer says Amber’s project is the perfect embodiment of Girl Scout values.
