The City of Manitowoc is seeking a grant to assist with crane construction.
The $2.5 million grant would be used to build a new platform to hold two cranes that are already built, while also allowing for the construction of seven additional cranes in Manitowoc, rather than elsewhere.
According to a cover letter from the city, the project is expected to yield a good return on investment.
It will initially create up to five new jobs in the local workforce, while maintaining the 38 jobs added for the previous cranes.
If approved, the grant application through the Wisconsin Harbor Assistance Program would require a matching share of 20% in the amount of $628,000 to be paid by City Center LLC, the group that owns Konecranes, which built the big blue cranes.
The common council unanimously passed a resolution for the grant application on Monday (July 21st).
