Two Eastern Wisconsin legislators are teaming up for a new bill.
Representative Paul Tittl of Manitowoc and Senator Andre Jacque of New Franken have introduced a bill allowing adopted children who have attained the age of 18 the right to obtain a copy of their original, unaltered birth certificate.
The duo noted that, over the last several years, a number of states have changed their laws, and several now allow adopted children to access their original, unaltered birth certificate, including Alabama, Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Oregon and Rhode Island.
Rep. Tittl said in the announcement, “Adult adoptees should have a right to know who their biological parents are. Imagine what it would be like to not know one single person you are related to.”
The bill is currently being shopped around both houses for additional co-sponsorship.
