The Wisconsin Office of Children’s Mental Health is showcasing the link between extracurricular activities and student mental health.
The organization has released a fact sheet, which states that children who participate in extracurriculars such as lessons, sports, afterschool clubs, or community service tend to have better mental health.
Being involved in these activities helps students feel a better sense of belonging, creates strong bonds with their peers, develops conflict resolution skills, and makes them more engaged with school.
Linda Hall, the Director of OCMH, added, “Sometimes their after-school activity is the only reason kids want to go to school. Sometimes their community center is the only place kids feel safe and connected to supportive adults.”
