Grow It Forward and the Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA are working together to teach children how to grow their own food.
A Fork Farms hydroponic unit from Grow It Forward was lent to the Y as part of their Energyze summer program, allowing sixth through eighth graders to participate in growing leafy greens, herbs, and vegetables indoors.
The Fork Farms system utilizes hydroponic technology to grow produce efficiently and substantially, providing a hands-off opportunity for Y participants to explore how to grow food without soil or sunlight.
YMCA CEO Julie Grossman says, “Empowering young people with the skills and knowledge to grow their own food is a powerful tool for lifelong health and wellness.”
Amber Daugs, CEO of Grow It Forward, says they are excited to partner with organizations like the YMCA and local schools to nurture a new generation of food-literate youth.
The initiative is part of Grow It Forward’s broader commitment to food education and community nutrition.
