The father of a reckless homicide suspect in Green Bay has now been charged.
FOX11 reports that 48-year-old David Vanderleest faces one count of obstruction and aiding a felon for claiming he was watching 2-year-old Leo Escalante when the child was found unresponsive and later died at a hospital.
21-year-old James Vanderleest, who faces 1st-degree reckless homicide charges in Escalante’s death, says his father was the one with the child at the time of the incident, which happened back in June.
James and David would later go up to a cabin in Florence County before they were arrested by SWAT because of the incident.
When questioned, David would tell police that James explained to him that Escalante fell down the stairs before he died.
But a doctor told Green Bay Police that Escalante’s injuries were not consistent with those of a fall down the stairs.
Attorneys for David are looking to dismiss the case and get his bond reduced.
His next court date will be on August 14th.
