The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has released its report on the 2024 fish stocking numbers.
The 2024 stocking summary shows that the Manitowoc and Sheboygan Rivers lead their respective counties as the water bodies to receive the most significant uptick.
The Manitowoc River saw more than 77,000 chinook salmon, 17,000 brown trout, and 14,000 Coho salmon added, while more than 84,000 chinook salmon, 57,000 coho salmon, and 44,000 brown trout were added to the Sheboygan River.
Other notable numbers in Manitowoc County included the East Twin River receiving more than 40,000 chinook salmon, while Sheboygan’s Pigeon River had nearly 15,000 rainbow trout added.
Across the state last year, more than 5 million fish were stocked in inland waters, Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, and their tributaries.
Stocking not only boosts fish populations in areas where natural reproduction has slowed, but it also allows the DNR to evaluate management actions or fish culture techniques.
Chinook salmon led the way in Lake Michigan with over 1 million added, nearly 200,000 were stocked in Lake Superior, and over 1 million brown trout were added to inland waters across Wisconsin.
