A Green Bay man has been formally charged in the death of an infant.
21-year-old James Vanderleest made his initial appearance in a Brown County courtroom yesterday (July 16th) after being arrested late last month.
Vanderleest has been charged with First-Degree Intentional Homicide, Resisting or Obstructing an Officer, four counts of Felony Bail Jumping, and two counts of Misdemeanor Bail Jumping.
The Green Bay Police Department was called to a residence in the 100 block of Alpine Road on June 22nd on a report of a 2-year-old boy, Leo Escalante, who had suffered life-threatening injuries.
Leo was transported to a local hospital before being transported to another facility for further treatment; however, he would succumb to his injuries a day later (June 23rd).
Vanderleest and his father, 48-year-old David Vanderleest, were then arrested in Florence County on June 27th when authorities tracked them down after deeming the two to be suspects in Leo’s death.
While David is yet to be formally charged in the case, he is being held in custody on a $100,000 cash bond and is expected to make an initial appearance in the near future.
James remains in custody on a $2 million cash bond and will be back in court sometime in August.
