Many local fire departments will be receiving state funding for fire protection and inspections.
The Department of Industry Services (DIS) has released the recipients for this year’s 2% Fire Dues Payments Program, including substantial funding for communities in Manitowoc and Sheboygan Counties.
The 2% Fire Dues program secures funding by allocating 2% of the money brought in by the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance from fire insurance premiums across the state.
Major communities to receive funding include the Cities of Manitowoc, Two Rivers, and Kiel in Manitowoc County, as well as the Cities of Sheboygan, Plymouth, and Sheboygan Falls in Sheboygan County.
Manitowoc and Sheboygan will be receiving the largest sums, with each being awarded $145,167 and $206,871, respectively.
Per the rules of the program, any department receiving this funding is required to use it to pay for fire protection equipment, fire inspections, public education, or firefighter training.
In total, 30 Manitowoc County municipalities and 28 in Sheboygan County were subject to funding through the 2% Fire Dues Payments Program, and the complete list can be viewed by visiting dsps.wi.gov.
