An advocate who has been trying to save St. Boniface Church in Manitowoc is concerned about the church’s priorities following a ruling from Rome’s Supreme Court.
The court in the Vatican ruled last week in favor of an initial decision from Green Bay Bishop David Ricken to close the church.
John Mauer, one of the people wanting to keep the church open says while there is nothing wrong with building new social halls, office spaces and a possible school, “prioritizing that over St. Boniface Church with its rich history, excellent structural condition and architectural grandeur to glorify God right in the heart of downtown Manitowoc is a huge mistake that will be regretted for decades to come.”
Mauer continues to tell Seehafernews.com that there has been a lot of support for St. Boniface because of its significance and heritage.
While the group can no longer take action on the court side, Mauer says it’s up to Bishop Ricken of the Green Bay Diocese to step in and save St. Boniface from being sold.
Ricken previously stated that the church is no longer necessary for the care of the souls and would require a significant amount of money to update and reuse.
According to a statement from the Diocese, planning for the disposition of the church at S. 10th and Marshall Streets, including the contents and property, is now underway.
