The City of Sheboygan may be moving to help reduce carbon emissions.
The City’s Public Works Committee will meet tonight at 5:00 p.m., and one item up for possible action will be entering into an agreement with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for the Carbon Reduction Program.
This comes after the City was awarded a Federal Carbon Reduction Grant in April worth over $1 million.
If agreed upon today, this grant funding, in addition to a 20% match from the City, will be used to construct a separated pedestrian path linking the South Taylor Drive Trail with the newly constructed Kiwanis Park Trail.
The new section of trail linking the two existing ones would be on New Jersey Avenue and be equipped with trail lighting that matches that of the South Taylor Drive and Kiwanis Park Trails.
With the project, Sheboygan hopes to not only reduce carbon emissions by putting a focus on non-motorized transportation, but also connect local businesses and parks and enhance public safety.
If this agreement with the Wisconsin DOT is approved, the City will then put out a Request for Proposal by the end of the year to select a design consultant in hopes of a plan to be approved by the Common Council early next year.
