One firefighter was sent to the hospital following a fire in Green Bay over the weekend.
The Green Bay Metro Fire Department was called to a paper mill on the City’s east side on Saturday (July 12th) at approximately 4:00 a.m.
Initial calls reported a fire had broken out involving one of the mill’s paper machines.
Upon arrival, fire crews observed smoke coming from two paper machines with a fire burning in the area where paper dust is created during the manufacturing process.
The severity of the situation caused the fire to be upgraded to a Box Level One, and crews attacked the flames from both the roof and interior.
High heat and poor visibility due to smoke caused crews to be rotated out.
After a lengthy battle with the smoke and flames, the fire was deemed extinguished after roughly four hours, with one firefighter being sent to a hospital for medical evaluation; however, no details were provided regarding their status.
At this time, no damage estimates are available, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Green Bay Metro Fire was assisted in the response by Howard Fire Rescue, De Pere Fire Rescue, Ashwaubenon Public Safety, the New Franken Fire Department, Ledgeview Fire Department, and Brown County Public Safety Communications.
