The new “Now What?” meetings being offered by the Lighthouse Recovery Community Center look to address what life is like once substance abuse has stopped.
So much focus is put on those actively experiencing substance abuse that, oftentimes, those further along their journey may not get the care they need.
Ian Schebel, Outreach and Development Specialist for Lighthouse Recovery Community Center, Sheboygan, spoke with SeehaferNews.com and explained, “You’re so used to hearing the noise that it’s difficult to listen to quiet. You’re so used to the noise that it’s almost frightening to not hear anything. That’s where the “Now What?” meetings come in.”
Schebel also mentioned how these meetings are an innovative way to help the community.
“It’s a game changer in my opinion,” he said emphatically while also adding, “Having been in the recovery community for years now, I have never encountered a meeting like this. It is a perspective that the community hasn’t really looked at just yet.”
The “Now What?” meetings debuted at both the Manitowoc and Sheboygan Lighthouse locations last month and have been a rousing success, with many people grateful for the creation of this type of assistance.
A big part of their success is based on the fact that before these meetings, there wasn’t anything like them being offered in our community.
Schebel also told us, emotionally, “The fact that recovery is a spectrum and that substance abuse disorder is also a spectrum, I would have to say, and this is just my opinion here, I don’t think that meetings like this have popped up because we are trying to keep people alive.”
As so many resources are put towards aiding those actively experiencing substance abuse disorders, those in recovery, or who consider themselves to be recovered, can often be forgotten.
However, thanks to the “Now What?” meetings, that is no longer the case in Manitowoc and Sheboygan.
Meetings will be held every Monday in Sheboygan and every Friday in Manitowoc.
