Two of Manitowoc’s American Legion teams picked up close wins yesterday.
The 17u team was able to get past Kimberly’s 17u squad, winning 4-3 at the Marinette Firecracker Tournament, while the 16u team was able to hold off Seymour, winning 8-7.
Kimberly had a 3-0 lead by the top of the 3rd inning, but Manitowoc took the lead in the bottom of the 4th with a Kevin Gilbertson single, a Cameron Shilts sacrifice fly, and an error.
The 17u team was able to hold onto the lead thanks to pitching from Jake Hillmer, who got the win.
The hurler surrendered eight hits and the three runs (two earned) over seven innings, striking out eight and walking none.
The 16u team was led by the bat of Ethan Emmet, who drove in four runs in the game.
The lead went back and forth in the 1st inning before Emmet drove in three runs in the bottom of the second inning for Manitowoc to take the lead 6-2.
Seymour would put up a fight throughout the game, but two extra runs would secure the win for Manitowoc.
Bryce Ducat was the winning pitcher for Manitowoc 16u, allowing five hits and four runs over four innings while striking out two and walking none.
The 17u team will continue at the Marinette Firecracker Tournament today against host Marinette, while the 16u team will return home to welcome the Indians later today.
