The City of Sheboygan has changed the City Attorney selection process.
At this week’s Common Council meeting, the decision was made to make the City Attorney a position that is selected by the council itself, rather than an elected official as it had been in the past.
The ordinance states, “This Charter Ordinance shall take effect 60 days after its passage by a 2/3 vote of the members-elect of the Common Council,” however, the motion was passed by a unanimous, 10-0 vote.
In addition to this change, the council also voted to change the tenure of any individual selected to the role.
After this week’s vote, the City Attorney will now serve in the position indefinitely, until the Common Council chooses to select a replacement.
These changes to the selection and tenure of a City Attorney come in the aftermath of former City Attorney Charles Adams’ resignation earlier this year following an investigation into his conduct in office.
