Numerous fires over the holiday weekend in Appleton have been attributed to improper disposal of fireworks.
The Appleton Fire Department responded to multiple incidents on the night of Independence Day involving dumpster fires across the city.
Each of the dumpster fires were put out, however, one extended to the exterior of a neighboring structure. While fire crews were not called for this incident, firefighters returning to the station from a previous call saw the flames.
Quick work by AFD prevented the fire from causing major damage to the building, which has been labeled as a mixed-use occupancy.
In their statement regarding the fires over the weekend, the Department sated, “The Appleton Fire Department would like to remind residents that the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) recommends soaking used or unused fireworks in water for a period of time (Ideally overnight) before disposal to prevent trash fires and potential hazards. After soaking, they should be wrapped in plastic bags (Ideally two) and placed in the regular trash.”
AFD also stressed the importance of having insurance for homeowners to protect and re-establish in the event of a fire.
