After four years of cleaning Civil War gravestones in Evergreen Cemetery, phase two of the initiative has begun.
The Civil War Gravesite Restoration team was in the cemetery on Wednesday, where a total of nine gravestones of Civil War veterans were replaced, another was saved, and four new monuments were placed around the Grand Army of the Republic section.
Organizer Dan Reinke tells SeehaferNews.com that Hofmann Monuments crafted new grave markers for George Greenwood, Wilhelm Heisenfeldt, Milo Schofield, Frederick Schenck, Heinrich Spinker, Franz Reichert, George Warwick, Theodore Jahn, and for an unknown union soldier.
Additionally, the marker for William Robinson was saved.
To ensure the markers last longer, the crews poured new cement bases for each soldier, and holes were drilled for rods to help keep them vertical.
Reinke thanked Hoffmann Monuments for creating the new grave markers and the Evergreen Cemetery team for installing them to ensure these heroes’ final resting places will be forever remembered.
