Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers has signed two bills related to nuclear energy innovation into law.
One of the bills supported by Representative Shae Sortwell will enhance the state’s knowledge of nuclear energy potential by requiring the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin to conduct a nuclear power siting study to meet the state’s growing need for carbon-free energy.
Senate Bill 125, now known as Wisconsin Act 12, will assess existing nuclear energy opportunities within the state’s energy portfolio and identify sites for the development and demonstration of nuclear power and fusion.
A $2 million allocation in the state budget will support the study.
The other bill creates a Nuclear Power Summit Board to organize, promote, and host a Wisconsin nuclear power summit in Madison.
Sortwell said of the bill that, “The nuclear renaissance is here, and Wisconsin is ready to lead it.”
