Some funding in the Wisconsin state budget will go toward dry-docking the USS Cobia.
A joint statement from 25th District Representative Paul Tittl and 9th District State Senator Devin LeMahieu explained that $500,000 has been secured in the legislation’s version of the state budget to restore the Cobia.
Tittl says, “This investment will inform thousands of annual visitors about the bravery and sacrifice of the Greatest Generation who fought in the Pacific or labored to build the world-class submarines in Manitowoc.”
LeMahieu says the investment will help preserve “the structural integrity of the USS Cobia and ensure future generations can learn about Manitowoc’s contribution to the Allied forces during World War II.”
The Wisconsin Maritime Museum has been working to raise $1.5 million to bring the submarine out of the water so it can be cleaned and repaired at Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay in September.
It will be the first time since 1996 that the USS Cobia has been dry docked.
