The Village of Allouez says a commendable step was taken in the closure of the Green Bay Correctional Institution.
According to an announcement from the Wisconsin Legislature, the Joint Finance Committee included a proposal in the 2025-2027 state budget that would decommission GBCI by the end of 2029.
Allouez Village President Jim Rafter says failing to add the closure of the prison in the final version of the bill would not just be a missed opportunity, but a blatant dismissal of the public’s will.
Rafter continues saying, “GBCI is a century-old, obsolete, overcrowded facility that puts staff, incarcerated individuals, and surrounding neighborhoods at risk. Its continued operation wastes taxpayer money, hinders progress, and places a burden on the Village of Allouez that we should no longer be expected to carry.”
State Senator Eric Wimberger says he looks forward to continuing the vital work of protecting public safety in the region.
