As June comes to an end, Safe Harbor of Sheboygan County is offering tips to better understand one of the most overlooked forms of abuse.
June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month, and Safe Harbor is reminding the public that everyone can have a role to play in protecting older adults.
Elder abuse can take numerous different forms, and it’s important to understand the warning signs.
These can come in emotional signs such as increased anxiety or fear, isolation from family and friends, or withdrawal from regular activities.
Another common form of elder abuse comes financially, which can be recognized through fraudulent signatures on financial statements, unpaid bills, or even unusual or sudden changes in spending patterns.
The signs that will be the easiest to recognize will be physical signs of abuse.
These are most commonly seen as unusual weight loss, missing daily living aids such as glasses or canes, unexplained injuries, or unattended medical needs.
On elder abuse, Safe Harbor of Sheboygan County has said, “Know the warning signs. Trust your instincts. Speak up when something doesn’t feel right. Anyone can make a report. Anyone can help.”
