The world of semi-pro football was rocked this weekend by a major upset.
The Sheboygan County SaberCats traveled down to Ralph Serpico Field in Melrose Park, Illinois Saturday to take on the Illinois Cowboys, a team that has two national championships under its belt and was ranked among the top 10 teams in the country.
It was a tight battle all the way through, and the Cats held a 28-22 lead with just five seconds left.
The Cowboys had the ball and a shot to tie it up, but the lockdown defense of Head Coach TJ Schouten came up big, with Zay Kelly deflecting a pass into the hands of Antonio Fontanez, who took it to the house to secure a 34-22 win.
Prior to the start of the season, Schouten was on the On the Line Podcast where he said his team had a loft goal of winning a national championship this season.
This win puts them on a lot of teams’ radars as they improved to 7-0.
The Cats will have a couple of weeks off before returning to their home field at Lakeland University on Saturday, July 19th, for a matchup with the Southern Lakes Blue Devils.
